What is United States Masters Swimming?
United States Masters Swimming’s (USMS) prime credo is fitness. Masters swimming means wanting to be fit, having the pleasure of being with other swimmers sharing these interests, and for some releasing the competitive juices from time to time.
USMS is a national organization that exists to help swimmers enjoy the sport to its fullest. USMS organization is composed of several zones, regions and local clubs. For example, the River City Sharks is a local club in Lawrence, Kansas and is in the Missouri Valley region that is part of the Breadbasket zone. Competition is based on this organizational structure with local, regional, zone and national championships. USMS encourages swimmers of all abilities to become a part of this great sport and stay fit for life.
Who are the club members?
They are a represented by fitness swimmers, competitive swimmers, and triathletes. Teams can be composed of all levels of swimming ability from inexperienced to national caliber.
What are practice sessions like?
Typically, the first fifteen minutes
of the 1.5 hours are for general warmup. The coach then starts practice
with a set designed to get the swimmers ready for the main set(s). The
main sets are designed to stress the different energy systems and are designed
with the swimmers ability in mind. Some sets will be included to improve
stroke technique.
